Musica Nuda
: 55/21 (Blue Note | EMI)
The world moves in mysterious ways: Musica Nuda, an inspirational duo, was born from the chance meeting of Petra Magoni (voice) and Ferruccio Spinetti (double bass). Their paths crossed in 2003 on the Italian music scene (Petra is a singer and is married to Stefano Bollani, the virtuoso pianist, while Ferruccio Spinetti is a musician in the Italian group Avion Travel).
Petra Magoni was planning a short tour of a few of the more intimate clubs of her native Tuscany and had already started rehearsing with a guitarist friend. The day before their first tour date, the guitarist unfortunately fell ill. Instead of cancelling the date, Petra asked Ferruccio if he would be willing to step in at the last minute. Ferruccio accepted, little did he know what would follow.
Musica Nuda: the concept, the first albums
The quasi-improvised concert was so successful that the two "Voice'n'Bass" protagonists built up a repertoire of their favourite songs in just a few weeks. They went on to record their first album, "Musica Nuda", in a studio near Pisa in the space of just one afternoon. Musica Nuda was a natural name for their musical concept and they got together to form their duo.
As the name implies, Musica Nuda is music stripped bare. Music devoid of its trappings - whether it be known or unknown work, lyrical pieces, jazz, pop or soul - to get to its very core. It is the art of reinstating "musical silence", that essential yet so often forgotten key that unlocks emotion. It is the art of using complicity and humour to oppose two forces, a heaven-sent voice and a magnificently anachronistic double bass, in a subtle musical joust.
Inspired by the success of the first album, Musica Nuda quickly went on to record a double album "Musica Nuda 2" (March 2006), a DVD "Musica Nuda; Live in Paris" (June 2006), and their first live recording "Musica Nuda - Live ā Fip" (September 2007).
"55/21" first release on Blue Note
The Italian duo, Musica Nuda, has signed to Blue Note France! The group now has both Italian and French musical identities, a duality revealed in this new release "55/21".
A huge tribute is paid both to Italian songs and songwriters (Si viaggiare with Gianluca Petrella, Bocca di rosa, Una carezza in un pugno), and French ones (La chanson des vieux amants adapted in Italian, Crocodail).
With "55/21" Musica Nuda takes their music to another stage. It is more soothing and touchingly intimate (Io so che ti amero', Anema e core, La pittrice di girasoli, While my guitar gently weeps) and infused with nostalgic romanticism (Fronne with Nicola Stilo, Basta un colpo di vento). The album includes a beautiful version of La chanson des vieux amants (La canzone dei vecchi amanti) interpreted by Stefano Bollani who seems to be in a state of grace. Musica Nuda's inherent humour and creative energy are also evident (the delectable Crocodail with Jacques Higelin, Bocca di Rosa, Si viaggiare).
With the help of Sanseverino, Musica Nuda, with Petra Magoni's voice, gives a 'pink panther' rendering of a very spicy version of It had better be tonight by Henry Mancini. Italian actor Tony Laudadio's entrancing voice is very moving on the Italian adaptation (Sergio Bardotti) of Eu sei que vou te amar (Io so che ti amero') by Vinicius De Moraes and Carlos Jobim, while Stefano Bollani again joins Musica Nuda for a touching version of The very thought of you by Ray Noble.
While remaining faithful to their unique "nude music" concept, "55/21" confirms Musica Nuda's ability to work with other exceptional performers and their many original pieces prove their talent as composers and authors. (Fredy)
